RAVENSBURG, GERMANY – Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team has won the silver medal at the 2009 MLP Cup
after falling 2-1 to Sweden in the gold medal game on Tuesday.
Canada has won the tournament (formerly known as the Air Canada Cup) in six of the seven years of its
existence, winning 21 of 23 games all-time.
Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) scored her tournament-leading fourth goal early in the
second period of Tuesday’s gold medal game to opening the scoring. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering,
ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) and Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, QC/Dawson College, Collégial AA) had
assists on Agosta’s goal.
Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/Cornell University, ECAC), playing in the tournament for the third time, led
the offensively, tying for the tournament lead in scoring with seven points (three goals, four assists).
Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) also finished in the top five with six
points (two goals, four assists). In total, 18 of Canada’s 20 skaters recorded at least one point.
Canada outscored its opponents 18-2 in its four tournament games, with both goals against coming in
Tuesday’s loss to Sweden. Goaltenders Christina Kessler (Oakville, ON/Harvard University, ECAC) and Liz Knox
(Stouffville, ON/Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS) finished with a combined 0.50 goals against average and
0.973 save percentage.
Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team will fly home on Wednesday, with all players and staff returning
to their club and school teams throughout North America.
